The Polish Lancers were the last of the cavalry to abandon the lance as their primary choice of weapon. This was due to the high cost of firearms. The Polish lancers were employed by the French during the Napoleonic wars. They were later used by the German's in WWI, also known as the Uhlan Cavalry. The polish lancers were a part of Napoleon's Imperial Guard and fought bravely in The Battle of Waterloo. The French lancers used lances that were roughly 9 feet long and were made of wood with metal tips. As can be seen in the picture, the Polish Lancer had a flag as a part of their lance, known as a lance pennon.
